When God Asks You to Move the Stone:

Lessons from the story of Lazarus

Sometimes Faith Means Moving the Stone

Have you ever found yourself waiting for God to do something that He may actually be asking you to do?

In John 11, Jesus stood outside Lazarus’s tomb and gave the crowd a strange command:

“Take away the stone.”

Jesus was about to do something they could never do. They couldn't raise Lazarus from the dead. They couldn't create the miracle. But they could move the stone.

That raises an important question for us: Are we sometimes waiting for God to do what He has already asked us to do?

In my latest blog post, I share how a frustrating experience trying to get home from Boston caused me to reflect on Lazarus, faith, and what it means to trust Jesus when we don't know how things will turn out.

The lesson is simple, but challenging:

Jesus doesn't ask us to accomplish what only He can accomplish. He asks us to be faithful with what He gives us to do.

You may not be able to raise the dead.

But you can move the stone.

I came across this clip by John Crist, a Christian stand-up comedian, who thinks about what the Bible story of Lazarus may have been like from Lazarus's perspective.
