BlogHow then shall we live? is a question about identity. How do I live my life as a follower of God? I wrote another post on identity but from a different perspective. If your church is the true church, how were people saved before it existed? That question was posed to a friend of mine, and it raises an important question about how we understand God’s people throughout history. Is the oldest church necessarily the true church? Is the remnant simply a particular denomination? And what does Revelation 12:17 actually mean when it describes those who “keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ”? In my post, Who Are God’s Remnant People? A Biblical Answer, I explore the biblical story of the remnant from Adam and Eve to the Second Coming. I look at the remnant in Revelation 12, the faithful people preserved throughout Israel’s history, Jesus’ use of Scripture on the road to Emmaus, and the connection between salvation by grace, faithfulness, and obedience. My conclusion is that God’s remnant is not simply about belonging to the oldest church—or even about belonging to a particular denomination. God has always preserved a faithful people who center their lives on Him, His Word, and His mission. As a Seventh-day Adventist, I believe this has important implications for how I understand my own spiritual identity and mission. Who are God’s remnant people?
