I strongly recommend listening to the audio, bellow is a brief summary of what is covered in the audio. Also the text bellow is taken from my post on Being a Disciple. I have broken that post down into 6 mini-posts where the focus is on the audio content.

You can also subscribe to my podcast on iTunes if you don’t use IOS you can check out other options here, or simply search for Pr. Marlon’s Blog wherever you get your podcasts.

The Ordinance of Humility

I originally came across this content while preparing for a communion service at our local church. Part of the service includes the Ordinance of Humility or foot washing. Some may wonder why we continue to do this since all of us arrive at the church by car and most of our feet are quite clean. I go into more detail on communion and foot washing on this post. Here, I would like to emphasize the discipleship dimension of the foot washing.

So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
- John 13:12-17 NKJV (bold mine)

Being a disciple is not only about knowing. It goes beyond simply believing. The process begins with knowing, then believing, but you’re not a disciple until you begin doing, imitating, copying, living as Jesus lived. Studying, learning, hearing, are very important, but only as far as it leads to doing. Jesus reserves the blessings to those who not only know but also do what He did. Jesus is our example, and He wants us to do what He did, to emulate His lifestyle, to continue the mission.
